Follow up email to Margaret about the big meeting.

Dear Margaret,
Thank you again for your time the other week.
I was just following up to see what is happening with my Hybrid car park spaces idea. I have come up with a project theme: Driving Environmental Awareness Project (Jordan's DEAP)
You said that you would contact me when there was a date in mind for the meeting but i haven't yet received anything and it has been quite a while.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future with a date for the meeting.
The URL address to my blog (which is a constantly updated journey) is: www.JEpstein36.blogspot.com

I am just finding out the last little bits of info for the answers of those questions you asked me to look into. (as explained on latest post on my blog)

Yours Sincerely,
Jordan Epstein

Update of what is currently happening

I am waiting for Margaret to get back to me with the date and time of when the meeting is with the Westfield board (very high in status I believe).

I am currently doing research and answering questions that she asked me on hybrid cars at our little meeting, that I’m nearing completion on.

She also brought up a new challenge for me to look into, I can't tell you at the moment what it is but it was a great idea and I am going to find out if it is possible or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if this school project turned into into a major environmental opportunity, driving awareness (excuse the pun) and better decision making when it comes to actively caring for our planet.
The main project theme is: Driving Environmental Awareness Project (Jordan's DEAP)

Meeting with Margaret Faddy (almost success/nearly there)- Parking manager at westfield

She approve it but now we have to go to the Westfield board and 'sell' the idea to them. Margaret was going to have the meeting with me and then go to the board but once she had heard how good I was and realised that it was my idea and that there is no point in why should she talk about something that she doesn't understand what has been happening fully.
She asked me some questions that I didn't know the answer to and I have been researching them and will send her the answers when I have finished, I will also post them on the blog.

I am truly looking forward to having the meeting with the Westfield board and I am going to have to do a lot of research before I go there. It is really hard to write about what we talked about and it would be easier if you could ask me questions about it. You can freely ask questions about what happened in the comments section on this post and I will answer them by posting the answer on the blog along with the question and the person that asked it.

Thank you for reading and I will keep you updated with what is happening.
I have truly enjoyed this unit and it is a unit that should be continued for many years to come. At the end of all my meetings and I have got the verdict I will write a conclusion on how this unit has been fun and what it has taught me.

Wentworth courier article that was submitted

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a student in year 6 at Cranbrook school. I’m currently undertaking a unit of inquiry called 'how we organise ourselves' at school. This is an exploration into our governmental systems. As part of this unit we have to choose a local issue or problem and then contact whoever need be to try and convince/prove to them that the issue should be fixed.

I am trying to create priority hybrid car park spaces in Westfield Bondi Junction. This will encourage people to buy hybrid cars because there will either be cheaper valet parking or priority spaces. The bigger picture is that hybrid cars don’t burn as much fuel. This is benefiting the environment as well as owner/driver. (Think locally, act globally).

Please take the time to look at my blog by typing in the URL address jepstein36.blogspot.com.

My main interest in contacting you is to let the public know what a young school boy like me is doing to help the environment and also to show that I have taken the learning and knowledge a step further than just what we have been told to do in the school hours.

Yours sincerely,

Jordan

What I sent to Westfield.

Dear Westfield,

My name is Jordan Epstein and I am a student in year 6 at Cranbrook school. Kim O'Connor (Chief Editor of the Wentworth Courier) has previously written an article on me about my interest and love for being a young entrepreneur and for raising thousands of dollars each year in support of many different charities.

Currently my year grade and I are undertaking a unit of inquiry called 'how we organise ourselves' this is an exploration into our governmental systems (how it works and what they do).

As part of this unit we have to choose a local issue or problem and then contact whoever need be to try and convince/prove to them that the issue should be fixed or changed. This part is called ‘have your say’.

I chose to try and create priority hybrid car park spaces in Westfield Bondi Junction. This will encourage people to buy hybrid cars because there will either be cheaper valet or normal parking or priority spaces (next to disabled parking). The bigger picture is that hybrid cars don’t burn as much fuel whilst travelling. This is benefiting the environment as well as whoever pays the expensive fuel prices. (Think locally, act globally).

Please take the time to look at my blog which contains constant updates of what I am up to by typing into the URL address box- jepstein36.blogspot.com.

I look forward to hearing back shortly with the intention of meeting someone to discus this opportunity for my school project that will benefit the environment as well.

Yours sincerely,

Jordan

Facts about hybrid cars

Introduction
The first known prototype and publication of an SH bicycle is by Augustus Kinzel (US Patent 3'884'317) in 1975. In 1994 Bernie Macdonalds conceived the
Electrilite SH lightweight vehicle which used power electronics allowing regenerative braking and pedaling while stationary. In 1995 Thomas Müller designed a "Fahrrad mit elektromagnetischem Antrieb" in his 1995 diploma thesis and built a functional vehicle. In 1996 Jürg Blatter and Andreas Fuchs of Berne University of Applied Sciences built an SH bicycle and in 1998 mounted the system onto a Leitra tricycle (European patent EP 1165188). In 1999 Harald Kutzke described his concept of the "active bicycle": the aim is to approach the ideal bicycle weighing nothing and having no drag by electronic compensation. Until 2005 Fuchs and colleagues built several prototype SH tricycles and quadricycles.

Heavy vehicles
Hybrid
power trains are used for diesel-electric or turbo-electric railway locomotives, buses, heavy goods vehicles, mobile hydraulic machinery, and ships. Typically some form of heat engine (usually diesel) drives an electric generator or hydraulic pump which power one or more electric or hydraulic motors. There are advantages in distributing power through wires or pipes rather than mechanical elements especially when multiple drives—e.g. driven wheels or propellers—are required. There is power lost in the double conversion from typically diesel fuel to electricity to power an electric or hydraulic motor. With large vehicles the advantages often outweigh the disadvantages especially as the conversion losses typically decrease with size. Presently there is no or relatively little energy storage capacity on most heavy vehicles, e.g. auxiliary batteries and hydraulic accumulators—this is changing.

Hybrid vehicle engines and how they work
Petroleum fuel engine assist
The first type can propel itself using only the electric motor at very low speeds. The gasoline motor also has the ability to kick in and help out the electric engine when more power is needed, such as when passing or climbing a steep grade. The Toyota Prius and the Ford Escape Hybrid fall into this category. When a car like the Toyota Prius accelerates from a standstill, the electric motor gets the vehicle rolling and continues to drive it up to around 25 mph before the gasoline engine automatically starts up. Under hard acceleration from a stop, the gas engine starts immediately to provide maximum power. The electric motor and the gas engine also work in tandem when driving conditions demand more power, such as while climbing a hill or passing other vehicles. Because the electric motor is used so much at low speeds, the Prius and Escape get better mileage in the city than they do on the highway.

Electric assist

The second type uses the electric motor only to assist the gasoline engine when it needs extra boost, again during brisk acceleration or when going up a hill. The Civic Hybrid and Honda Insight fall into the second category. When a car like the Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid, the electric motor assists the gas engine only when driving conditions demand more power, such as during hard acceleration from a stop, while climbing a hill or passing other vehicles. As with normal, gas-powered cars, these hybrids get better fuel economy while cruising on the highway, as that is when the gas engine is least taxed.

Fuel consumption and emissions reductions
The hybrid vehicle typically achieves greater fuel economy and lower emissions than conventional
internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), resulting in fewer emissions being generated. These savings are primarily achieved by four elements of a typical hybrid design:

1. recapturing energy normally wasted during braking etc. (regenerative braking) This is a mechanism that reduces vehicle speed by converting some of its kinetic energy into another useful form of energy, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
2. having significant battery storage capacity to store and reuse recaptured energy;
3. shutting down the gasoline or diesel engine during traffic stops or while coasting or other idle periods;
4. improving aerodynamics ; (part of the reason that SUVs get such bad gas mileage is the drag on the car. A box shaped car or truck has to exert more force to move through the air causing more stress on the engine making it work harder. Improving the shape and aerodynamics of a car is a good way to help better the gas mileage and also improve handling at the same time.
5. using low rolling resistance tires ; (tires these days are made to give a quiet , smooth ride but rarely is efficiency considered. These tires cause a great deal of drag, once again making the engine work harder , consuming more gas mileage. Hybrid cars use special tires that are more inflated than regular tires and stiffer, which reduces the drag by about half, improving fuel economy by relieving stress of the engine.
6. relying on both the gasoline (or diesel engine) and the electric motors for peak power needs resulting in a smaller gasoline or diesel engine sized more for average usage rather than peak power usage.
These features make a hybrid vehicle particularly efficient for city traffic where there are frequent stops, coasting and idling periods. In addition
noise emissions are reduced, particularly at idling and low operating speeds,in comparison to conventional gasoline or diesel powered engine vehicles. For continuous high speed highway use these features are much less useful in reducing emissions.

A hybrid car works by using an electric motor when the gas engine is not needed. The gas engine is off at speeds from 0-35 mph. At those speeds the electric motor is in use. At higher speeds the motor kicks in.

Taking the topic/unit further (into my own time)

In my own time I spoke to two people from Woollahra council about two different issues.
Firstly, I spoke to Gail about Bay View Hill Road (Kambala's car line (pick up) road), it is hazard towards drivers, the road is half completed and turns your wheel towards a fence. She said to speak with the roads department, Daniel Jones and gave me his phone number. I will post some pictures on my other blog about it (see below, the dot point for other blog address). The second lady I spoke to was named Katherine, I placed a complaint about the Lyon park tennis courts bubbler. It is out of order and, quite dirty and uncleaned. She said that it is probably owned by the tennis courts and i would have to speak with them. If not she will put some sort of complaint/fix it form in to the Woollahra maintenance team.

Think Locally act Globally!!!

My MDC (Make A Difference Challenge) is to introduce priority Hybrid Cars spaces in Westfield, Bondi Junction. Most probably on parking level P3 next to the disabled car park spaces or they will be located in the valet section (Yes, the car owners will have valet parking that will be cheaper. It is better to have them located in the valet section because less places are used which means there would be more places for them to park). These two parking places are the closest car spaces to sets of lifts. This is rather than having free car park spaces throughout Westfield because it would be to difficult to achieve and they would not agree to put them in because they don't have the space and would lose money because it would be free and money is all that they care about.(Or is it)

On a national level this will lower Australia's Carbon footprint because hybrid cars don't use and burn as much fuel as normal cars. If it is a success in Bondi Junction's Westfield then maybe all the Westfields around Australia will agree to participate.

It is connected globally because hybrid cars don't use and burn as much fuel as normal cars. This is helping to reduce the dramatic level of global warming. If having the car park spaces is a success then all the Westfields around the world might participate in this wonderful worthy cause to help lower the amount of green house gasses that we (human kind) emit.

PS. i will create a fact page about global warming and how Hybrid cars work and why they are made.

Westfield infomation

This is some information i found out about westfield, Bodi Junction. This will help me when i need to contact them to place my request about priority hybrid carspaces (see the latest post).

Free Hybrid Car Park Spaces in Westfield (FHCPSW)

I've called Westfield and they said that they do not have any hybrid car park spaces!!!

              • WHAT- I AM TRYING TO CONVINCE/PROVE TO WESTFIELD THAT THERE SHOULD BE FREE PARKING FOR HYBRID CARS.

              • WHY- I BELIEVE THAT HAVING FREE HYBRID CAR SPACES IN WESTFIELD WILL ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BUY HYBRID CARS WHICH ARE VERY FUEL EFFICIENT THUS LOWERING AUSTRALIA'S CARBON.

              • WHEN- I ONLY HAVE A COUPLE MORE WEEKS UNTIL THE UNIT FINISHES BUT I HOPE TO ACHIEVE WHAT I SET OUT TO DO.

            • WHERE- I WOULD LIKE TO START WITH JUST WESTFIELD BONDI JUNCTION BUT THEN PROVE TO EVERYBODY THAT ITS A REALLY GOOD IDEA AND THERE SHOULD FREE HYBRID CAR PARK SPACES ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!

              • HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN THIS IS ACHIEVED?- I WILL SEE A SIGN SAYING FREE HYBRID CAR PARK SPACES 'THIS WAY'. MORE HYBRID CARS WILL BE BEING BOUGHT AND AUSTRALIA'S CARBON FOOTPRINT (OVER TIME) WILL LOWER!!!

              Thursday, September 4, 2008

I think i have changed my make a difference challenge

I am trying to find out if there are hybrid carcark spots in Westfield Bondi Junction.
If not i will inform the Westfield board that there should be more free carspots for hybrid cars. This will also encourage people to buy hybrid cars lowering Australia's carbon footprint.

Express train from Sydney to Armidale (Visa-Versa)

              • What-I would like to minimise the train travel time from Sydney to Armidale (visa-versa).

              • Why-My grandparents frequently travel down to Sydney from Armidale.

              • Who-I would like to contact the State government and then get them to put a new (get a train repaired and put it on the track) train on the route/track

              • When- I would like to achive this by the end of this unit.

              • I will know this has been achived when the lenght of the train trip has been shortened and people will travel with joy.
